With Viu More Dirk Roelens and Benny Lauwers have established a company in Duffel that focuses on augmented reality applications for the B2B sector.
Augmented reality is a technology where virtual elements are projected onto the real world using a smart device. One creates a completely new world by adding extra virtual information to the real world.
Viu More recently received approval for a cooperative and innovative research project supported by iMinds from Ghent. Together with a number of other industrial partners and research groups from the University of Ghent and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, extensive research will be conducted with the focus on a substantial increase in the performance and robustness of the AR software. This will greatly expand the number of opportunities and applications. At the same time, we will investigate the advantages of using augmented reality compared to other technologies that can be used for the same applications.
“Augmented reality is less known today than Virtual Reality where you can completely immerse yourself in a virtual world,” says Benny Lauwers. “We are convinced, however, that the efforts made by major technology players such as Google and Microsoft augmented reality will soon be better known to the general public.”
According to Lauwers, the industrial world is currently in the early stage of Industry 4.0. Internet of things, big data, drones, 3D printing and robots are starting to find their way into industry. “One technology will pass through a bit faster than the other,” he says. “But virtual and augmented reality also contribute to the 4th industrial revolution. Viu More wants to use the innovations in augmented reality to develop smart applications and bring them to the industrial market. These applications support and train operators and maintenance staff in their work. The virtual elements that Viu More adds to the reality using a smart device can be instructions (3D and 2D), checklists and other applicable data. ”
The most important application of Viu More today is an application with which visual inspections are carried out with the help of a tablet and where the virtual addition of instructions and digital storage of the inspection results are central.
